I've never met a lawyer, how does it work?

You have questions, you are facing difficulties, or you’ve been summoned to the Tribunal and you have decided to make an appointment with a lawyer.

While you're waiting for that appointment, you're wondering how things are going to work out.

No worries, during your first appointment, your lawyer will ask you to describe your issue. If you don’t know where to start, your lawyer will ask you some questions to help you explain.

During this meeting, this latter will explain to you what can be done in your situation and what would be the next steps.

Your lawyer will also present the fees that you are free to refuse.

This first appointment does not commit you to anything.

After it, you will receive a contract stating the fees and work of your lawyer that you will have to sign if you want to choose the firm for your case.

The lawyer will tell you which documents are required for your case.

You will be kept informed throughout the process. I never send any document without your prior approval. I also send you all the elements I receive in your file so that you are always informed of what is happening in your case.

What is a fee agreement?

You had an appointment at the law firm and your lawyer told you that you were going to receive a fee agreement. But what is a fee agreement?

It's very simple: it's your lawyer's estimate. This agreement lets you know the amount of the fees proposed, the costs applied in your procedure and the conditions of intervention.

This document, to be signed by you and your lawyer, sets out the financial outlines of your lawyer's mission for the coming months.

Do the fees have to be paid in one go ?

In legal proceedings, fees are usually invoiced in three instalments: at the beginning of the case, in the middle of the case and at the closing.

If you are having financial difficulties, don't hesitate to talk to your lawyer, who can offer you a payment facility.
